The Dutch government and businesses are joining forces to tackle shockwave jams ('ghost tailbacks'). Eleven consortia are working together with the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, the province of North Brabant, City Region of Eindhoven and Rijkswaterstaat (Department of Waterways and Public Works).

They are developing new in-car technology to prevent shock waves on the Dutch highway A58 between Tilburg and Eindhoven. Shock wave jams arise when a driver on a busy road has to brake unexpectedly, triggering a chain reaction behind him.
